What is CodeWomen?

CodeWomen is an empowering and supportive community for women (including trans and non-binary) in the tech field. We provide personal tech and career support. CodeWomen offers its members a safe environment to share their plans, ambitions, doubts and questions with each other. By building this community, CodeWomen stimulates professional as well as personal growth.

CodeWomen is also a unique place for career changers, to share their experiences and questions with other women+ developers, and find role models. It provides an ideal opportunity for networking and meeting new people, and getting career advice from experienced women developers. The community stays in touch via Slack and WhatsApp, and there is a LinkedIn page where posts are published regularly. CodeWomen is also on Eventbrite.

CodeWomen gave me hope, for a migrant like me to have hope of working in the IT field was made possible when I came to one of CodeWomen events. My whole perception changed, I saw young women who are striving in the world of IT, and I told my self if they can make it then I'll work hard to make it, the process isn't easy, with determination and hard work, I will get to the top.

The beginning

The CodeWomen project started mid 2020, and is a project within the Open Cultural Center in Barcelona. CodeWomen was intended as support for the female students of MigraCode, a free coding bootcamp for people with a refugee or migration background who are eager to work in the tech industry. CodeWomen’s goal was to support and encourage the small group of female students during their bootcamp, to work towards their successful graduation as Junior Web Developer. The first CodeWomen meetings had six participants on average. Since then, CodeWomen has grown into a large women tech community, led by a full-time Project Manager with a team of six volunteers and one intern.

Where we are now

CodeWomen has grown into a community for tech women in Barcelona. CodeWomen is connecting around 1,000 students, self-learners, and experienced developers. The CodeWomen LinkedIn page has over 3,000 followers, mainly tech women in the Barcelona area (±70%). We organise three in-person events every month plus three to four special events for our volunteers each year. Around 30 companies and coding schools have partnered with us to host our events.
